  3. Thanks chaps - hope you had a splendid Christmas. The snow products used in the pic are a mix of Geoscenics and Deluxe Materials. Look out for a 'snow special' in the next issue of Model Rail magazine!

  4. Great photo. Wishful thinking, but I am wanting to have a winter scene when I have progressed my layout. From an experts perspective, how do you find modelling snowy effects - worth the extra bit of effort? Time consuming? Too costly - my layout is 12 foot by 8 foot, so a fair amount of snowy effects are expected.

    1. Hi Gary,
I always enjoy creating snow/winter scenes as it's a welcome change from the usual spring or summer scenes. Besides, as most of the landscape is likely to be under a covering of snow, there's actually less work involved in the scenic preparation - it can all be fairly rough. All depends how far you want to go - creating frozen streams/ponds, icicles, snow drifts and so on, takes up extra time and realistic winter trees are tricky to get right. Treating buildings, cars, walls and fences all takes time, so it can add up. But, it is rewarding though...
I'd recommend trying it out on a small diorama before a 12x8ft layout - will give you more of an idea of whether you'll be bored after treating 1ft!
