NCB CLASS 08

Just a quick update on the semi-fictional NCB Class 08 project: the model's now complete (apart from 3-link couplings) and ready for service on Maudetown Colliery. This has been an enjoyable, albeit an indulgent, project and NCB No.17 Iron Maiden looks well at home amongst the rakes of NCB and BR mineral wagons. The NCB lettering and numbers are from a Fox Transfers decal sheet for wagons and, strictly speaking, the loco should have cream coloured lettering (as seen on the Class 14 below). But, it's my layout - so there!!

The shade of blue may not be exactly the same, but the 'Gronk' makes a good stable mate for my Hattons/Heljan Class 14.

The driver's orange-trimmed donkey jacket can be glimpsed through the cab windows, along with the detailed interior.

Some careful weathering serves to accentuate the relief on the bodyshell.

  1. Hi George do you have a model number for the old Gronk? Awesome work!

  2. Hi Jaymes, not sure what you mean by 'model number'? It started life as a medley of different bits of '08's cobbled together by the chaps at Bachmann to provide a basis for a magazine feature. So, the body was from an early BR black (numbered 13029) model, while the chassis was from a BR green version.
I've numbered the finished model as NCB17, which is fictional, as is the 'Iron Maiden' name!
    Hope this answers your question...

    Cheers,
    George

  6. Hi NCB Fan Alan!
Thanks for the nice comments - glad you like the model. The 08 has been painted with Humbrol 104 matt enamel. It's not 100% perfect, but it's a very close match to NCB blue. Once the loco has been weathered, there's very little difference.
The yellow is a shade that I mixed myself, using Lifecolor acrylics - matt yellow (LC03) and a drop or two of matt white (LC01). The red on the handrails is also from Humbrol (no.153).

    Cheers,
    George

  8. Hi Adam,
Yes, the bodyshell just had the printed icons (BR logo and numerals) rubbed down with fine wet/dry paper, then the whole thing was washed and scrubbed with a toothbrush (a desert spoon of diluted soda crystals in the water as a cleaning agent).
The cab unclips and slides off and the glazing is easy to pop out.
The priming and painting of the model is shown in detail in the forthcoming Model Rail DVD release: The Definitive Airbrushing Expert, out in a few weeks...
I'm working on a big feature on detailing the Bachmann and Hornby 08s for Model Rail, so look out for it over the next 6 months!
    Good luck with your model!
    George
